Homemade Non-Toxic Lavender Laundry Detergent

I’m constantly trying to find easy ways to minimize toxins in my life. Making your own laundry detergent is simple, cost-effective, and helps keep you away from harmful and unnecessary chemicals. This powder detergent is easy to store, lasts for a long time, and is scented with an all natural essential lavender oil from Dr. Bronner. It’s also much less expensive than buying regular detergent.

Borax removes stains and neutralizes odors. You can use it all over the house: on carpets and rugs, toilets, baby clothes, delicates, and dishwashers. Borax in the laundry helps removes tough stains, is a natural alternative to colorsafe bleach, deodorizes and freshens, and naturally softens hard water. All Natural Super Washing Soda is fragrance and phosphate free.

The directions below will yield 48 washes (if using 1 tablespoon per load). For heavy soiled laundry use 2-3 tablespoons of powdered lavender detergent.

Here is what you need:

1 cup Borax

1 cup Super Washing Soda

1 Bar of Dr. Bronner’s Pure Lavender Soap *

Cheese grater

Blender

*If you are planning on using the entire box of both the Borax and the Washing Soda, then purchase 5 bars of soap. The ingredients for above are the proper proportions to make 1 batch of the detergent, which is 48 washes, or 24 washes if you use 2 tablespoons per wash. Experiment with the different scents of the Dr. Bronner’s soaps to see which soap scent you like best!

Directions:

  1. Use a grater to shred the soap.
  2. Add 1 cup of Borax and 1 cup of Washing Soda and soap shavings to a blender.
  3. Blend on low for 30 seconds.
  4. Store in a glass jar.
  5. Use 1 tablespoon per wash (or 2-3 for heavy soiled loads).
