Switch to glass!

How long have you had your plastic tupperware for? Did you know that your plastic tupperware is absorbing food oders and other bacteria? Which means that eventually the bacteria gets into your food that you’re eating? Google “harmful effects of plastic” if you’d like to read more on this topic because there are too many negative effects of plastic to even list in this blog post! While it’ll be nearly impossible to banish ALL plastic from my daily life, I’ve taken steps in using only glass to store my food to eliminate as much plastic chemicals as I can. Here’s how!

STORING LEFT-OVERS

I like using the glass pyrex to save all of my leftovers, instead of plastic tupperware. These glass pyrex dishes are freezer, refrigerator, microwave, oven, and stovetop safe. This means that I will take my leftovers out of the fridge, let them thaw out to room temperature, then take the lid off and place it in the oven. Too easy!

STORING PANTRY ITEMS

Recycling glass jars is a great idea when it comes to finding glass storage jars. I prefer the wide mouth because they are much easier for loading food into them. It’s also good if you’d like to save a little $. Anytime you have a glass jar of spaghetti or salsa or milk, or any other type of food that you’ve bought in glass, don’t throw them away! Peel off the label and place in the dishwasher, and the label should come off from the heat, and you’ll be left with a perfect glass storage container! This is an awesome way to grow your glass stash. Some uses for your glass stash: storing almonds, coffee beans, almond meal, coconut flour, dried fruit, etc.

In my pantry, I have a mixture of recycled glass  jars, and purchased wide mouth mason jars. I store all of my pantry items in glass jars. As soon as I come home from the grocery store, I place all my pantry food in glass mason jars. I like knowing that my food that is sitting in my pantry is not absorbing any plastic chemicals. I also personally love the way glass mason jars look in comparison to plastic bags! If you want to take the cute glass vintage look a step further, you can purchase chalk labels to write the items’ name and date or purchase (you don’t want anything to sit in the pantry too long so it’s a good idea to remember when you bought the item!).
